그늘은 그림자로, 'a dwelling for 2 shadows'
an artist's studio in Maryland, a story about home.

...
Designed for a full-time artist, “a dwelling for two shadows” is an artist studio in Maryland and the first official project by the practice "Meaningless Architecture." Taking on the form of a drawing series, atmospheric soundscapes, a self-published zine, and a series of meaningless events, it then evolves into a built work of architecture. Non-constructed means of reading architecture practice the imposition of memories into the way we read space. This was expressed through the depiction of a fictional process told by a character based on the client (the artist) as a modern placeless man. This then informs the design, material choices, and formation of strange details to tell a story through architecture.

[1; story] In this story, architectural drawings and illustrations form the misty afterimage of a house in a field that we could call "home." The story echoes our universal longing to find places as placeless people. A dwelling is found, lost, and made again just as shadows make and unmake themselves every day in the natural waning of light

[2; chair for two shadows]
A chair was designed to accompany the artist's studio and serve as a prelude to find the emotional resonance of the physical materials and architectonics described in the story. Designed to be produced with low-cost materials, the chair is meant to mimic the architecture's ideas distilled to the simplest tangible form. The chair catches shadow and light in its enclosure, utilizes the same materiality in lime-washed plaster and charred wood, and is meant to be paired with its mirrored counterpart like how the resulting physical artist studio was built from half of a house that exists only in memories.

[3; artist studio]
The artist's studio is a dwelling designed to be the home of the artist's work; providing an empty space to enjoy the light and wind, retreat inward, and house all of the artist's pieces. The preceding story acts as the liner notes for the space, explaining the strange detailing and design of the lighting in the space. The way the studio interacts with the natural daylight traces the artist's routine as they enter the studio, work in the morning, take a break for lunch, do some work with waning energy, and finally are sent back for dinner+rest. The light travels and naturally compels the artist to complete the tasks of his perfect routine. This space is an exercise on lighting design, extensive programmatic tracing, and making a low-cost, emotional space with limited materials. Currently under construction, the story aims to influence the buildings construction and lift those who work on it beyond what a building is supposed to be.
