Referencing the writings of writer William Burroughs, an urban proposal was made for a strip of emptiness [breath of air] in an urban grid that prioritizes automobile transportation over public space. By taking a line of the urban grid and giving it back to the people, it becomes public space.
This space is reinforced by an imposing structure [urban artifact], creating a clear separation and acting as another degree of privacy for a artist community and a half way house. These are located on opposite bookends of the site.
Housing units for the artist community and halfway house residents align along the new staggering broken edge, connected by the institution which is a straight line, reinforcing order.
