"phase of absence"
Placed on a dramatic cliff overlooking the East Sea, Phase of Absence is a gallery with two main programs, an art gallery, and a cinema, they are given equal square footage to the middle empty space in between them to generate gathering and discussion. This space creates an atmosphere through light and integration with nature.
Inspired by Park Chan Wook's, "Decision to Leave", the project is about viewing. The façade allows for semi-transparency so those from the outside can see the activity within the building that centers on two viewing programs, a cinema, and an art gallery.
The combination of cinema and gallery space allows for moments in which people can read each work of art/exhibition in the context of being integrated with nature, stimulating discussion through the in-between space, and processing two different works of art.
With architecture that provokes emotion and utilizes history, the aim is to generate meaningful processing between two cultural forces.
